Welcome to the first episode of IMC’s weekly BAN BAM podcast!
Improvised Music Company (IMC)'s new BAN BAM podcast will explore creative work from inspiration to execution, through conversations with a host of women working in jazz and creative improvised music today.
Throughout the series you’ll get an insight into different musicians’ approaches to the creative process and their work over the course of a career, along with deep-dives into some particular works, inspirations and areas that define them.
Our guest for this first episode is vocalist and composer Sue Rynhart.
Dubliner Sue Rynhart has been crafting her unique and captivating blend of neo-folksy, jazz-laden, classically-inspired original music to international critical acclaim, stemming from her groundbreaking work as part of Dylan Rynhart’s 10-piece Fuzzy Logic Ensemble. Her songs, both soulful and severe, are a fine fusion of the avant-garde and the emotive.
"beautifully sculpted vignettes that seduce on multiple levels. She's only two albums in, but already Rynhart sounds like one of the most original emerging voices in the hazy world where folk, improvisation and contemporary song entwine" - All About Jazz
Improvised Music Company (IMC) is an Irish Arts Council funded resource organisation for Irish and Irish-based jazz musicians, and a specialist promoter of jazz, improvised and ethnic music in Ireland. Founded by jazz musicians and supporters in 1991, today we actively support and promote the Irish jazz scene, and have a hands-on involvement in many aspects of music making throughout the island, including festival programming, concert promotion, touring, commissioning, education and audience development.
BAN BAM is an activity which began in 2017 to develop and support the work of women in jazz and improvised music, particular female instrumentalists and composers which are underrepresented in this genre.
As well as this new podcast series, BAN BAM activities in 2020-21 includes the Commissioning Award from IMC in partnership with Moving On Music. Performances of the new works will be announced later in 2021, and the award recipients are supported towards career development goals throughout the year.
The next BAN BAM Commissions will be awarded in 2022.
